guanylate cyclase
Enzyme catalysing the synthesis of guanosine 3\',5\'- cyclic monophosphate from guanosine 5\'-triphosphate (cyclic GMP (cGMP) is used as a second messenger in heart muscle and photoreceptor cells). The plasma membrane form of guanylate cyclase is an integral membrane protein with an extracellular receptor for eptide hormones, a transmembrane domain, a protein kinase-like domain, and a guanylate cyclase domain. Examples: sea urchin receptors for speract and resact; and atrial natriuretic peptide receptors. Two soluble forms of guanylate cyclase are also known, heterodimers of highly related subunits, 70-80 kD.
